Why Lavender?
The Healing Power of Lavender During World War I
During World War I (1914–1918), lavender oil was widely used in hospitals and battlefields to treat soldiers suffering from stress, insomnia, and trauma. Field nurses and doctors recognised its calming properties and would diffuse lavender oil in medical tents or apply it topically to soothe nervous soldiers before and after surgeries. Beyond its stress-relieving effects, lavender also served as a natural antiseptic, providing dual benefits during one of history’s most challenging times.
One notable figure, René-Maurice Gattefosse , a French chemist and one of the founders of modern aromatherapy, documented the therapeutic effects of lavender. His work during this era inspired widespread use of essential oils in treating stress-related ailments and established lavender as a symbol of healing and relaxation.
